'Thornton Le Dale'
The historic picturesque village of Thornton Le Dale, is situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
It lies 16 miles from Helmsley, 9 miles from Kirkbymoorside, 11 miles from Malton, 2 miles from Pickering,
15 miles from Scarborough, 30 miles from Thirsk, 20 miles from Whitby and 28 miles from York.
It has a much photographed thatched cottage by the stream, a traditional market and stocks on the village green.
On the left hand side of the main road, just before the bridge, you will see some Alms Houses that were built in
1670 and were gifted to the village by Viscountess Elizabeth Lumley who owned much of the land in the area.
Just past the Alms Houses you will see the Old Grammar School also gifted to the village by
Viscountess Elizabeth Lumley for only those children who were able to read the New Testament.
